Saturday, September 25 - Amtrak from DeLand to Tampa

Leave from the DeLand train station (8:56 AM) and head to Tampa. The train will have a café cart with snacks, water, tea, and coffee. Arrive in Tampa (12:23 PM), transfer to the Hampton Inn & Suites Tampa/Ybor City. You will have a private tour of Historic Ybor City. Group dinner at Columbia Restaurant. Overnight in Tampa.

Schedule for Ybor City Tour

The bus will take us to El Centro Asturiano, one of the most impressive mutual aid society buildings still standing. When it was dedicated in 1914, the Tampa Tribune maintained that it was the most beautiful building in the South. The structure boasts a cantina, theater, and a ballroom. We will proceed to El Círculo Cubano, the Cuban Club. From there we will walk to Las Novedades, a social club that includes a stunning arcade and series of columns. A few hundred feet away, we encounter Ybor City’s first brick building and the oldest cigar factory standing: the V.M. Ybor factory. Constructed in 1886 by the enclave’s founder, Vicente Martínez Ybor, the building has survived many owners and work places. Around the corner is Martí Park. Between 1891 and 1895, José Martí “the Apostle of Cuban Liberty,” came to Ybor City a dozen times to rally cigar workers to the cause of “Cuba Libre.” Curiously, the park is owned by the government of Cuba! We will finish the tour with a tour of las casitas, original cigar workers homes that have been preserved.

Gary R. Mormino will lead the tour. A professor emeritus of history at the University of South Florida, Mormino has taught history for 45 years. A Fulbright scholar in Italy, Mormino has written extensively about Ybor City, immigrants, and Florida. He and his colleague George Pozzetta wrote The Immigrant World of Ybor City in 1987.
