1. Seafood Trail (Duration: 2 hours)

 

Take an educational walking tour of the eco-conscious village of Sudureyri, where the locals have embraced an intriguing approach to food. Meet your guide outside the village church and walk to a local fish processing plant for a series of seafood tastings not soon forgotten, not only for the freshness but also for this place's unique focus on sustainability.

The inhabitants of the Westfjords have often had to fight for survival in an unforgiving landscape due to isolation caused by blocked mountain roads in winter, destructive avalanches, or the decline in fish populations in its waters. Learn what drives the people of these small villages dotting the coast to fight incessantly to keep their communities afloat and save them from the fate of abandonment. This enlightening tour gives an insight into how the ingenuity of the villagers has contributed to their small communities.

In Sudureyri, stop at various places to enjoy delicious tastes of local produce and meet the local retailers, producers, and innovators. The local fishing boats are speedboats, which allow fishermen to quickly motor out to sea and promptly return with a fresh, high-quality catch. The speed and efficiency are such that the local catch is sold in Europe just 36 hours later. The fishermen strive to practice sustainable, environmentally friendly fishing to sustain their own future and that of their children.

Enjoy free time to browse the village before returning to the ship.

Please note: Walking for approximately 1.6km (1 mile) is required for this tour, mainly on paved flat surfaces, with some inclines and a few steps as well as a few gravel paths and uneven surfaces. The approximate distance covered on foot is one mile. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Wear sturdy, closed-toe, non-skid shoes. Bring a wind- and waterproof outer layer and a hat.

2. Secluded Valley (Duration: 2 hours)

Discover some of the highlights at one of the most rural parts of Iceland, the Westford region. The Westfjords offer many secluded valleys filled with hidden gems to explore. In one such valley, called Stadardalur, lives a family of six that invites you to their home. At Baer farm, breathe in the fresh air of the fascinating scenic valley and walk through the ruins of history left behind from the past hundreds of years.

Baer farm, in Sadardalur Valley, is run by young farmers that pride themselves on having sustainable farming with sheep, for during summertime, their sheep roam around freely to the adjacent fjords. Learn about their struggle getting snowed in during winter and the joy they get from living in such a peaceful environment. Get to know the history of Stadardalur Valley as well, which at one point was inhabited by multiple farms and one of the first places in Iceland to be settled by the Vikings. Take a historic walk by old ruins located next to their farm after which you get the chance to interact with the animals while enjoying Icelandic delicacies.

Before leaving for the pier, stop by a fisherman's shack down by the shoreline and have a view over the oldest mountain in Iceland, Goltur mountain, which is over 16 million years old. Before returning to Sudureyri you also get to meet the Stone Troll that watches over the road to the valley and listen to her folktale.

Return to the pier after your tour filled with culture, nature, and history.

3.​ Walking between valleys - Stadardalur valley to Vatnadalur Valley (MODERATE) (Duration: 3 hours)

Enjoy a day out in nature on this hike that offers moderate difficulty followed by a sweet refreshment. The Westford's offer many secluded valleys filled with hidden gems to explore. In one such valley called Stadardalur lies a family-owned sustainable farm where you can enjoy some fresh air and beautiful views.

Begin your tour with a short drive to Stadardalur, from which you walk to a beautiful lake in the valley to enjoy a little local refreshment in the quiet and peaceful surroundings. After enjoying the view, continue your walk and end at the farm. Baer, a sustainable, family-run sheep farm. At Baer farm, breathe in the fresh air of the fascinating scenic valley and walk through the ruins of history left behind from the past hundreds of years.

Enjoy a little coffee and cocoa before transferring back to the pier.
